| Thulabos Residential Development – Fourways.
Thulabos (only in South Africa will you find a name consisting of the Zulu word, quiet, with the Afrikaans name for bush) was designed as a medium density security complex.
Using new urbanism principles gleaned from successful development worldwide, the double storey units are placed close to the road to enhance neighbourly communication and urban policing but also freeing up the remainder of the 300m² stands.
The ground floor living areas feature 3m wide double barn doors in all directions which enhance the typical South African outdoor living but also “extends” ones living room beyond the house to the boundary walls.
The pigmented plaster external wall coverings also ensure a virtually maintenance free finish for the residents.
The architect kept virtually all the trees that were on the site before and adapted the layout accordingly. This resulted in a unique little village with narrow streets winding through established trees – it almost seems as if the project has been there for decades.
